2016 Superbowl "Craptime" Show

Superbowl Sunday was upon us this past weekend and, as we all know, the Halftime Show always generates attention. This year's main performer was Coldplay, with guest features by Bruno Mars and Beyonce. These three artists typically perform fairly well on the charts so it is safe to assume everyone was happy with the performance, correct? Wrong.

Firstly, let's discuss the virtual traffic that is crafted around the Superbowl Halftime Show. Social media always served as a frontrunner for discussing the narrative around the biggest music event of the year and, this year, it was no different. In fact, Twitter compiled data suggesting that, out of the millions of tweets associated with the event, the Halftime show generated the most!

The tweets were mostly positive...at first. However, the discourse shifted when Twitter users began to discuss Beyonce's portion of the concert. CNN reported the attitudinal shift when Beyonce performed "Formation," her new single. The song pays homage to the singer's heritage while the music video touches on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the relevant discussion of police brutality.

The criticism was that Beyonce aligned herself with the #BlackLivesMatters movement. Users claimed that the issue police brutality is fraudulent and that our country needed to #BoycottBeyonce because the lives of our police officers matter, too.

A #BoycottBeyonce rally will be held on February 16 outside of the NFL's headquarters in New York City.

I loved the halftime show. Beyonce showed us who the REAL QUEEN was. But, there will always be people who feel that this was a "Craptime Show."

G'day.
